On April 4, 1984, Guinea-Bissau issued a set of 3 stamps to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Each stamp features an image of a seperate airplane.

Guinea-Bissau 8 pesos Sud Aviation Caravelle

Developed in the 1950s, the Sud Aviation Caravelle is a twin engined passanger jet with its engines mounted in the rear. The Caravelle’s first flight occurred on May 27, 1955.

Built to satisfy France’s civil aircraft committee’s call for a medium-range aircraft capable of carrying up to 65 passengers and 1,000 pounds of cargo up to 1,200 miles. Its launch customer was Scandinavian Airlines Services and was ordered by airlines on every continent. 282 planes were built when the Caravelle’s production shut down in 1972.

Guinea-Bissau 22 pesos Douglas DC-6B

Built by Douglas Aircraft Company between 1946 and 1958, the DC-6 was a four-engine aircraft, originally designed as a troop transport. After the Second World War, it was redesigned to compete with the Constellation as a long-range commercial airliner.

The DC-6 was designed to carry between 42 and 89 passengers up to 4,700 miles(dependent on the variant). 704 DC-6’s were constructed, and there are several still active today.

Guinea-Bissau 80 pesos Ilyushin IL-76

Developed by Ilyushin in 1967, the IL-76 was designed as a cargo aircraft to carry 88,000 pounds a distance of 3,100 miles. Intended to replace the An-12, it can operate from rough and unpaved airfields in remote locations.

The IL-76 first flew in 1971, and the Russian Air Force took its first delivery of the type in 1974. It quickly became the primary transport aircraft of the Russian Armed Forces. The IL-76 has also seen substantial civil use. On top of its cargo role IL-76s have operated as waterbombers.
